Klosters is a picture-perfect Alpine holiday resort: a chic chalet-style village, authentic traditions and an international character thanks to its many cosmopolitan residents. This is probably why even royal guests feel at home here.
Klosters became known as a winter and summer holiday resort over 100 years ago. A decisive impulse for its development into a stylish holiday classic for connoisseurs occurred in the 1950s. At that time, many famous names from the primarily American and British film, music and theater scene discovered the ski resort, which earned it the nickname «Hollywood on the Rocks». In the wake of this time, many British and American guests were drawn to Klosters, who found their second home here. They shaped the style and atmosphere of the holiday resort for decades, and their children still do today.
Klosters has been in the media worldwide in recent decades thanks to its illustrious guests from the British royal family. Despite this, the elegant village, which has retained its original character and chalet style, has never been out of touch. On the contrary: discreet luxury with understatement has become the formula for success in the upper Prättigau. Even today, many famous guests who want to relax in peace and quiet still spend their holidays here.
Klosters has been one of the most family-friendly holiday resorts in Switzerland for years. The leisure activities on offer include one family fun after another: themed trails, scooter runs, or the fantastic "Madrisa Land" - the largest playground in the Swiss mountains. The five animals of the Madrisa gang lead you through the children's land with games, fun and action. Numerous hotels that meet the strict guidelines of the "Families Welcome" seal of quality ensure the right accommodation.
Only the cabins of the Klosters Gotschnabahn, which are named "Prince of Wales," give you an idea of this. Otherwise, it is hardly noticeable that Klosters has been hosting illustrious guests from royal families, Hollywood stars, aristocrats and business tycoons since the 1950s. And that is a good thing.
Klosters is often not mentioned in the international press. The place is known worldwide as a classic holiday destination, but it is not one of those with the greatest media presence. And this is despite the fact that some Klosters guests have the potential to fill newspapers and television programs with their mere presence. In the past, only the royal family from Great Britain had an official photo opportunity during their visits to Klosters. The deal: After that, Prince Charles, Lady Diana and their sons would be left in peace.
What is almost forgotten: American high society from film, music, theater and literature came and went here as early as the 1950s. So much so that the village was nicknamed «Hollywood on the Rocks». Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Yul Brynner, Lauren Bacall, Gene Kelly and Greta Garbo are just a few of the names that have graced Klosters. Back then, winter holiday resorts claimed the charm of hideaways beyond urban civilization even more than today. Without Facebook, iPhones and YouTube. But with time, style and class.
Then as now, illustrious guests like to spend their holidays in Klosters. And with good reason: Here they can relax undisturbed. Luxury cars stay in the garage and parties are celebrated in their own chalets. Discreet luxury yes, ostentatiousness no. So you won't find any flagship stores of international fashion boutiques in Klosters - just small, fine shops with a sense of style and authenticity. If you want to stay in a hotel here, you won't find any 5-star palaces - but you will find the unsurpassable charm of a Chesa Grischuna or the understated luxury of well-equipped 4-star hotels.
